Founder & Chairman
Alex Ross was born and raised just north of Chicago in Glenview, IL. After graduating from the University of Kansas, he spent a year and a half living in Ghana and Kenya, consulting for Non-Government Organizations focusing on internally displaced youth and international refugees. He came back to Chicago and launched The Tavern Group, a group of three restaurants in the Chicagoland area, with two business partners, that he eventually sold in 2018.
In 2014, he co-founded New Coast Ventures (NCV), a venture lab based in Chicago, to launch and invest in companies throughout the Midwest. The firm invested in over 25 businesses across a myriad of sectors, including government, ad-tech, and real estate among others. The firm currently has two exits. Additionally, Alex works with a small family office, with a focus in alternative assets. From this position, he sits on the board of two companies and serves as an advisor to two. Investments include healthcare, venture capital, and private equity among other areas.
In 2017, he also founded the New Coast Foundation (NCF), a venture philanthropy based in Chicago to support local emerging nonprofits addressing urban poverty in unique ways. The foundation provides three-year, $300K grants, along with significant capacity support to nonprofits 3-10 years old and under $1.5MM in budget. NCF currently has two grantees, has raised over $1MM since inception, and is preparing to launch a second philanthropic fund in 2019.
